Balayage vs. Highlights: Which Is Right for You?

Balayage vs. Highlights: Which Is Right for You?

Two of the most requested color techniques in our Seattle studio — but they're not the same thing. Here's a breakdown to help you choose.

What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a freehand painting technique where color is swept onto the hair for a natural, sun-kissed gradient. It creates softer, more blended transitions with no harsh lines. It's low-maintenance because regrowth blends naturally.

What Are Highlights?

Traditional highlights use foils to create uniform, consistent lightening throughout the hair. They offer more contrast and brightness, and are ideal if you want a dramatic, all-over lift.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose balayage if: You want a natural, effortless look with less frequent salon visits.
  • Choose highlights if: You want maximum brightness, all-over dimension, or a more uniform color.
  • Choose both: Many of our clients combine techniques — foils at the root for lift, balayage through the mid-lengths for a seamless blend.

At Suh Jin Hair Art, we customize every color service to your skin tone, lifestyle, and hair goals. No two balayages here look the same.
